The Leading Group of Graduate School conducted an Investigation into the School of Graduate Education of Shanghai Jiaotong University

On the morning of December 25th, 2009, the leading group of Graduate School conducted an investigation into the School of Graduate Education of Shanghai Jiaotong University. The investigation group led by Prof. Jianhua Yan, Deputy Dean of Graduate School consisted of Director of Graduate Admission Office Weizhe Chen, Director of the Graduate Academic Affairs Office Gongyin Ye, Director of the Graduate Administration Miaohua Lv, Deputy Director of Disciplinary Construction Xiaoli Jiang. The goal of the investigation is to prompt the further development of our graduate education by thorough communication, which is favorable for us to learn the advanced concept and management experience from the brother university. Deputy Dean of School of Graduate Education of Shanghai Jiaotong University Zhaohui Du, Deputy Dean Mingzhu Liu, Deputy Dean of Jianbo Su, Director of Graduate Admission Office Xiaofen Wu and Vice Section Chief of Student Affairs Council Zhen Wang welcomed the investigation group.
Shanghai Jiaotong University is one of the oldest universities in our country, and it is the first universities in “211 Project” and “985 Project”, too. Shanghai Jiaotong University takes the talent -cultivation as the ultimate mission and its educational ideal and objective is to raise up the elites with both innovative ideas and leadership in all fields by knowledge instruction, potential exploitation and personality development. “To concentrate on practice and to explore the truth” is its creed in graduate education. In the academic research, the chief leaders encouraged the idealism instead of utilitarianism and paid great attention on the transition from “Dissertation-oriented tracking research” to “Problem-oriented original research”. They hope to create some original academic directions and to cultivate a group of top scientists stick to academic morality, so that the construction of the top university in world can be fulfilled.
The investigation began with a symposium. Deputy Dean of School of Graduate Education Zhaohui Du gave an enthusiastic welcome to the investigation group and he was pleased to meet the leading bodies of Graduate School of Zhejiang University. Deputy Dean Zhaohui Du introduced the fundamental state of graduate education in Jiaotong University to Zhejiang University’s colleagues, especially in the students’ source, safeguard measures, tutors’ input and international education. Then both leaders had a animated discussion on the selection of innovative talents, talent-cultivation concept and system, internationalization of graduate education, the reformation of graduate education system, full-time graduate education mode and graduate source allocation. The construction of graduate ideological and political system and study management came into attention during the meeting. There were much valuable experience enlightening our university as to the innovative graduate management such as student affairs council, ideological and political working mode, which can break the different degree barrier, and some effective supervisions of the extension student. In return Deputy Director Jianhua Yan was grateful for their reception and exchange and he showed our university’s achievements in innovative graduate education mode, classic course and graduate instructional system to them. In his speech the mid-term graduate review, doctor incentive and examination mechanism and international education environment are emphasized. Besides, our investigation group approved Jiaotong University’s measures to prompt the stated-funded graduates’ studying abroad and to normalize the graduate status management, therefore, we wished to introduced these methods into our relative work.
The leaders of Jiaotong University accompanied our investigation to visit the School of Graduate Education Building. The building (Ruiqiu Chen Building) is located in the middle of the Minhang Campus covering an area of 18,855 square meters. It consisted of public teaching area, meeting & lecture area and service & office area. There were common classrooms, graduate seminar rooms, case rooms and oral defense rooms in this modern buildings, which provides a fair academic environment for the students. We appreciated this new scientific pattern.
In the end both of the leaders thought highly of the experience exchange and agreed that the investigation enhanced the friendship between two universities. Leaders of Zhejiang University learned a lot from the brother university and decided to take the advanced experience back. According to the agreement, more exchanges will be arranged to impel the development of our graduate education industry.
