Developing Excellent Education for Postgraduates under the Context of Deeper Industry-Education Integration

In response to the call on "always pursuing the excellenteducation and further cultivating innovative talents" by the CPC GeneralSecretary Xi Jinping, Zhejiang University has put into practice the guidingprinciples proposed in the National Conference on Education, and made vigorousefforts on the construction of deeper industry-education integration ecosystemand the establishment of excellent education for postgraduates, all of whichare led by moral education, oriented by national strategy, piloted via theconstruction of College of Engineers, and characterized by innovation andentrepreneurship education.
Our university has been attachinggreat importance to moral and knowledge education, and dedicatedto improving the quality of ideological and political education forpostgraduates via the university-industry cooperation. We have been promoting the deep integration among ideologicaland political education, liberal education, professional education and interdisciplinarycultivation, and making innovations in the ways of cultivating thepostgraduates. We created the postgraduate education community jointly withsocial organizations, explored the Double Tutors "School Mentor + IndustryMentor", introduced and cultivated the professional mentor team; establishedthe characterization index of mentor training quality, introduced the evaluationcriteria of "caring for students, respecting teachers, classmaterelations, cultural construction, and team performance" (abbreviated as"Wuhao" in Chinese characters") for the learning guidance teams,and employed the industry leaders from Fortune Global 500 enterprises as ourmentors. We focused on the "ideological and political curriculum"model for postgraduates, developed the Engineering Ethics and otherdemonstration courses integrating industry and education led by prominentteachers, and built the ideological and political education system covering thewhole process of postgraduate cultivation. The chief designers of key projects(including Long March 8 launcher) were invited to participate in the cooperativecultivation and greatly improved the patriotism of postgraduates. We built thehigh-end practical education platform integrating localization andinternationalization, inherited the tradition for postgraduates assuming atemporary post for personal training and development with a history of morethan 20 years, launched the "Zhiyuan" overseas practice programme,and constructed nearly 200 practice training bases in China and othercountries, in which more than 1,000 postgraduates participated in socialpractices for 4-6 weeks in the countries and regions along the "Road &Belt".
To meet the urgent needs ofChina, we have enhanced the quality and abilities of postgraduates, whilemaking major breakthroughs and implementing open-up enrollment. We take charge of innovation paradigm transformationproactively, and guarantee the priority education with forward-lookinginnovation. We have been cultivating the innovative qualia of postgraduateswhile undertaking national strategic tasks, exerting more postgraduateresources in the major projects, and focusing on solving the problems likeinterdisciplinary cultivation while integrating the research practice. Since theinception of the "12th Five-Year Plan", our university has won 1special award, 7 first awards and 40 second awards of National Prize forProgress in Science and Technology in the capacity of initiating unit,constructed many national innovation platforms represented by major nationalscientific and technological infrastructures, frontier science centers andcollaborative innovation centers, and made a series of original achievements inclean energy, shield equipment, industrial control and epidemic prevention andtreatment, and other fields, We have been adhering to optimizing the layout forthe cultivation of postgraduates while serving the regional high-qualitydevelopment, promoting postgraduate education and school career synchronouslyand simultaneously, encouraging postgraduates to make contributions to China insuch aspects as fully implementing the integration of Yangtze River, servingthe development of Xiong'an New Area and promoting the construction ofGuangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area; we have established the high-endachievement transformation network (including 9 industrial technology researchinstitutes and 98 technology transfer centers), and created theindustrialization bases such as Dajiangdong Aeronautical Manufacture High-endEquipment Research Center and Wenzhou Institute of Science and Technology, etc.We have been adhering to cultivating first-class postgraduates whileaccelerating the open-up enrollment, carrying out the cultivation programme forleading talents in "Internet intellectual technology" engineeringinnovation jointly with the related enterprises to cultivate theinterdisciplinary doctors of engineering; carrying out joint cultivationprogrammes like "3+2" with Ecole Polytechnique and ColumbiaUniversity and other top engineering schools in the world. For the Sino-FrenchDouble Master programme, 49 high-level engineering postgraduates have beenjointly cultivated in four sessions.
We have further deepened thestructural reform, and constructed the College of Engineers as the pilot of the"special zone" of industry-education integration. We promoted the comprehensive reform of professional degreepostgraduates steadily, and took the lead in building the world-class collegeof engineers. We pioneered in carrying out and piloting the "Order-oriented"talent cultivation mode, established the joint cultivation class for master anddoctor of engineering based on the technical talent demands of aviationenterprises such as AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industries (Group) Company Ltd. andAVIC Chengdu Aircraft Industrial (Group) Co., Ltd., etc., and cultivated nearly200 engineering postgraduates (including chief engineers) to the aviationfield. We have explored the programme cultivation mode as per the futureindustries, and implemented such mode in 12 fields (including automobileengineering and its intelligence and mobile smart Internet of Things) based onthe development frontier of the industries such as digital economy, andestablished several branches in Ningbo and other regions, which effectivelysupported the transformation and upgrading of hundred billion industrialclusters (such as local new medicine development, etc.). Our university builtthe high-level practical teaching curriculum system in cooperation withenterprises, motivated industry experts to serve as members of the teaching,guiding committee, and formulated the postgraduate cultivation program jointlywith enterprises to ensure that the proportion of practical teachingcurriculums can exceed 50%, and set up 15 brand courses together withwell-known enterprises at home and abroad; we broke through the mechanism forcultivation of engineering degree postgraduates and industry qualificationassessment, and pushed the cultivation quality of professional degreepostgraduates to be improved by the engineer title reform.
We have implemented thecoordinated development of science and education, and built theentrepreneurship education brand based on innovation. We boosted the integration of discipline, scientific researchand talents, and accelerated the construction of open innovation ecosystem. Wetransformed the innovation advantages to the characteristics ofentrepreneurship education, took lead in putting forward the entrepreneurshipeducational concept based on innovation, established the first entrepreneurialmanagement doctor station in China. The entrepreneurship education modelsrepresented by the First Outstanding Teaching Award for Teachers inUniversities and colleges emerged, the entrepreneurship education won the FirstPrize of National Teaching Achievement, and the entrepreneurial team led by thepostgraduates won the Grand Champion in two sessions of "InternetPlus" Competition. We supported the teachers and students to conductindustry-education integration with full-chain entrepreneurial services, improvedthe entrepreneurship policy security system for teachers and students,established Zhejiang Intellectual Property Exchange Center, and helped teachersand students to get through the discipline chain, innovation chain and industrychain based on industry-university-research platforms such as Zijin crowdinnovation town and national science park, thus enhancing the effect oforiginal innovation transforming to industrial application. We promoted thelinkage of student entrepreneurship and alumni entrepreneurship, explored theentrepreneurial model of "Zhejiang University+ Alumni+ New Economy",established the ecological communities such as alumni enterprise headquarterseconomic park, and held the global alumni entrepreneurship competitions forthree consecutive sessions, which enabled postgraduates at school to gainexperience and wisdom from the entrepreneurship practice of alumni.
