School of Art and Archaeology stages its debut Faculty Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition

On April 22, the debut Faculty Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition of the School of Art and Archaeology kicked off in the Hall of Ancient Books in the Zhejiang University Library.

The exhibition puts on display over 50 works created by 15 faculty members, including traditional Chinese paintings, elegant calligraphic works and unique carvings.

To celebrate the 124th anniversary of Zhejiang University, Prof. CHI Changqing donated his immense calligraphic work—Zhejiang University’s Alma Mater (lyrics by MA Yifu)—to the University. This over-21-meter-long and nearly-8-meter-high work consists of 156 single-character works in Wei Stele script. It is by far the largest piece of calligraphy created by Prof. CHI.

The exhibition will last for one month. As the first of its kind since the establishment of the School of Art and Archaeology in 2019, the exhibition covers a wide spectrum of styles and concepts, aiming to mirror the creative outlook of the School and highlight the achievements of the University’s aesthetic education.

In a comprehensive university, art-related majors can bring into full play their unique assets of concretizing and visualizing cultural and aesthetic ideas to build character among students. Visitors said that they could feel charm of traditional Chinese culture and art and thus enhance their aesthetic appreciation.
